Cycling in Liguria

Cycling in Liguria: from coast to climb
Start your day with a cappuccino as the sun rises over the sea. Moments later, the mountains start calling. Italy is the heartland of cycling – and Liguria is a perfect example of that. Ride along the coast on the scenic Pista Ciclabile, or test your climbing legs on the legendary Cipressa and Poggio from the spring classic Milano-Sanremo.
From challenging mountain passes to flat coastal roads, Liguria has something for everyone – whether you're a passionate road cyclist or an adventurous mountain biker.

Cipressa and Poggio

The famous climbs from Milan-Sanremo are Cipressa and Poggio. The Cipressa climb is 5.6 kilometers long with an average gradient of 4.1%. Poggio is 3.7 kilometers long with an average gradient of 3.7%. They aren’t the toughest climbs, but definitely fun to include in your ride.

San Romolo

Cycle from Ospedaletti, Sanremo, Bussana, Arma di Taggia, and Santo Stefano to Imperia. Prefer to head into the mountains after the 23-kilometer-long Pista Ciclabile? The San Romolo nature reserve, just above Coldirodi, offers plenty of challenges. And don’t forget the final two climbs from the spring classic Milano-Sanremo: Cipressa and Poggio.

Pista Ciclabile

The Pista Ciclabile at the foot of Coldirodi is a delightful cycling path. Where a coastal railway once ran, there is now a walking and cycling trail. It takes you past old train stations and through historic tunnels. In 2015, the time trials of the Giro d’Italia were held here. The posters and pink lampposts tell the story of the Giro d’Italia.
